Piggy backing routers?

My ISP is Virgin media (50 MBS) with a Netgear router. I would like to Piggy back this router to another router (Dlink Dir-665). I have been trying for ages to link the two through to each other. I've been trying to link a computer to a Lan port of the Dlink router and then from the Dlink Wan through to a Lan port on the Netgear router. I would like to be able to use the wireless on the dlink router as well as all remaining Lan ports on both routers. I don't want to use anything else like a switch. I've been using RJ45 cables so would I need a cross over cable. Hope this is enough information. Everything I've come across doesn't help me so thought I'd finally go to a fourm.
